- Wisdom is just bottoming out at a higher level.
Wisdom is just bottoming out at a higher level.
A friend shared with me yesterday that he wasn’t ready to do anything about his stress until he hit rock bottom. By then, burnout was impacting every aspect of his life. He had no choice but to make a change.
It is so normal.
When we are stressed, we are least likely to do the things that support our resilience to stress.
We find ourselves running so fast just to keep up with the endless to-dos and life's demands, it feels nearly impossible to actually take care of ourselves. There just isn’t time for all that. (Or at least that is how it feels.)
And that is the trap.
It’s like refusing to pull over and get gas despite the low fuel indicator light on your dashboard. That 10-minute stop at the gas station is a heck of a lot more efficient than breaking down on the side of the road.
But even if we conceptually understand that wellness and productivity are not a zero-sum game, in the moment it can sure feel that way.
Today, are you willing to slow down long enough to take a moment to check in? What is your body telling you it needs?
If we can learn to listen to the gentle messages, our body will not have to scream at us to get the message.
My teacher often says, “Wisdom is just bottoming out at a higher level.”
The means learning to listen to the messages our bodies are giving us and taking real action before we hit rock bottom.
What might you hear if you are willing to listen?
In health and joy,
